DeWit: Arizona “Run Like A Mini Dougtatorship”

On Monday, Arizona Treasurer Jeff DeWit visited Tucson to discuss his opposition to Proposition 123. DeWit has been very vocal in his opposition to the education funding scheme pushed by Governor Doug Ducey.

DeWit has earned the scorn of Ducey due to his position that the State currently has adequate money to fully fund education without raiding the State Land Trust Fund, which would be the effect should Proposition 123 pass in a Special Election this May. “The economy in Arizona has grown over the past three years,” stated DeWit during his appearance on the James T. Harris radio show on Monday. “We have $600 million – literally right now – sitting in the State’s account. Projections show that it will grow to $1.6 billion next year. Now if we only have to give the schools $200 million, we can do that and still lower taxes. That is the smart way to do this; just use the money that has come in. Don’t pay any more lawyers, and save the trust fund.”

DeWit said that he believed there were two reasons why the Governor decide to reject the simple solution. “He announced the plan back in June, before we knew about the extra money coming in – we were still working off the previous year’s budget. And there was going to be a report in USAToday reporting that we were fiftieth in the country for school funding,” said DeWit. “I don’t think anyone could argue that our teachers are underpaid because we have some horror stories about teacher pay.”

DeWit said since that time, it came out that “we have all this money and I just think they don’t want to change course.”

“I have spoken with every Republican group in the state. The grassroots conservatives and the rank and file Republicans they are opposed to this,” stated DeWit. “They are adamantly opposed to this. They know this is not a conservative thing to do and they are mad with their own members who voted on this. So they know it is a bad gig. But at the Capitol there is favor factory mentality down there. You scratch my back I’ll scratch yours. It is honestly run like a mini Dougtatorship.”

“The two talking points is that it is more money for teachers and it won’t raise taxes,” DeWit said of the Prop 123 campaign. “Both of those things are lies. The more money for teachers was fact checked in the Arizona Republic about a month ago and it got zero stars. It is false. There is no requirement that a penny has to go to teachers. They are giving it to superintendents and the school boards to do with whatever they want with it. The ASBA (Arizona School Board Association), in a video on their website to promote this to their own members, says the great thing about the prop is how there is no accountability on how we spend this money. And the other thing is that it raises property taxes. Scottsdale Unified is going to get zero dollars out of the trust and the entire amount of money is coming out of the property tax increase because they are at the Qualifying Tax Rate so all of it comes from property tax increase. So, many communities around the state are going to see increases including here at Catalina Foothills. There are a bunch in Tucson. I don’t know how they can keep saying that there will be no increase in taxes when property taxes are going to go up with Prop 123 passing.”

When asked about the large donations to the pro-Prop 123 campaign, DeWit said that the money was provided by “the richest people in the state. From what I understand – what they say down there,” referring to the Capitol, “there is talk that they have been promised future tax cuts. There are cuts that are targeted to that, and that’s why they are giving the money. There is a reward kind of return. I have been told that there was a fundraiser at the Governor’s house where they wrote these checks. He invited them over, and there were some closed room talks and they wrote big checks. And that’s it.”

  1. I saw DeWit on PBS talking about this very issue. He was sincere, forthright and knew that he was risking his career with this issue. I don’t care that he is a Republican because he has shown to be a man of character and chose to protect the people of Arizona over his political party at his expense. We need more people like him from both parties in order to get things done.

  2. Publishing this interview was a genuine public service. I hope people will forward the article to every Arizonan they know.

  3. The Emperor has no clothes!!!

When a “judge” doesn’t know the difference between “or” and “and,” it should be a wake-up call to all Arizonans!

Such a judge would appear to be either a victim of the predecessors to the Common Core Agenda, or he/she is an activist who feels invincible.

It seems more clear every day that there must be a hidden purpose in the 123 scheme. . . .

We stand on solid legal ground to take the lawsuit as high as necessary to tell the schools that brought it against all Arizonans, to take a remedial course in English Grammar and learn the difference between “or” and “and!”

And, get your hands out of our pockets!

It appears to me that the Legislature violated 2000’s Prop 301 for several flush years by giving the schools added funding for two categories, when 301 authorized it for EITHER category — NOT BOTH!

    “or” NOT “and!!!”

When the lean years befell us, the Legislature had to stop funding both — which it certainly appears to have been doing unlawfully in the first place — and the plaintiff schools/districts sued to force US to give THEM MORE than 301 required!

Arizona, we are being robbed at governmental gunpoint on the one hand by the plaintiffs, on another by the judge, and on a third by Governor Ducey and the Legislature!

Just one more example of rogue “public servants” acting like tyrants and highwaymen!

If we raid our children’s state land trust for a mess of pottage to feed the voracious appetites of the parasites sucking the value out of the monies we already give to those administrators/educators who demand to be allowed to continue abusing and indoctrinating our children with the Granddaddy of all brainwashing/indoctrination programs while they build their fiefdoms on our children’s hearts, minds and souls, we deserve nothing more than the scraps they and the elected officials acting like tyrants deign to throw to the classrooms and teachers!

And, if we deserve scraps in our public classrooms, then we must acknowledge that no one but ourselves is guilty of subjecting Johnny to Common Core Math, ELA and the propaganda they call “education” that is producing the clueless youth clamoring for collectivist Bernie Sanders to become President of these United States!

Thank you, Treasurer DeWit, Five Former State Treasurers, ADI, Dr. Vicki Alger and every brave soul who is crying to warn us:

    Defeat Prop 123!

Because the Emperor has no clothes!!!

  4. The Legislature violated the trust of people by not giving schools what was mandated by the people in a Vote.

Now they are attempting to screw us over again ( go Republicans ) this is wrong wrong wrong. I will not vote for it.

  5. $1,000,000 from Bruce Halle. The same guy who paid for all the license plate scanning cameras in Paradise Valley. Nice!

  6. All that money to buy the signs, advertising, and favors for this proposition?!
This was sold as THE grand bargain to settle the lawsuit. If prop 123 stated in writing that the money had to go strictly to teachers, the administrators would throw a hissy-fit and fight this.
If this passes, it has to be up to everyday people to demand the school boards only use this money for teacher pay. I know most people think getting a school board to listen is like spitting in the wind. But that will be the only way to make lemonade IF this thing passes.

  7. The above comments are will said. Good for DeWit, any time you lose favor with Ducey you know your working for the best interest of the people.
We can only hope the voters can see through this scam.
I’ts time for some “PATRIOT LEADERS” to stand up to the plate and do the right thing.
There must be some somewhere ???????????????????????????

  8. I got a Robo-call yesterday, telling me that I should vote for Prop 123. After 32 years in the teaching profession, I know exactly where the money from that Prop, if approved, will go-into the pockets of administration, not into the classrooms, not to shore up the broken down facilities in which the teachers teach & the students learn. I will vote, “NO!” on Prop 123.

  9. And people Think Obama is an out of control Rogue. Doozy is taking care of his friends and they aren’t Teachers.

Teachers are getting schooled and they won’t be happy when they realize that there are no requirements that Prop 123 has no teeth in it to direct that the money must be sent in the classroom.

    Once again the students suffer.
