Gov. Doug Ducey vetoed SB1268 and SB1400 sponsored by Sen. Gail Griffin, that would have allowed developers to get around requirements to show they have enough water to sustain their projects. Ducey wrote in a veto letter that the bills, “would encourage a patchwork of water ordinances throughout our cities and leave our water supplies in peril.”
Ducey was joined by the Sierra Club in opposition to the bills.
The bills would have removed the requirement that proposed developments outside of Active Management Areas (areas around Phoenix, Prescott, Tucson, etc.) demonstrate an adequate water supply before development can go forward by allowing cities to opt out of this requirement.
