On March 26, 2017 at 3:45 a.m., Tucson Police officers responded to the 6900 block of South Alvernon Way for a report of a serious injury collision involving a vehicle and pedestrian fatality, 19-year-old Selena Analicia Hernandez whose next of kin have been notified. Tucson Fire personnel provided medical treatment, however the pedestrian was pronounced deceased on scene shortly after arrival.

In the area where the collision took place, Alvernon Way has one northbound and one southbound lane along with a universal left turn lane. The driver involved was traveling southbound on S. Alvernon Way in a gray, 2007 Volkswagen Jetta. A second vehicle was stopped facing northbound in the northbound lane. As the driver of the Volkswagen was noticing the stopped vehicle, he ended up striking the pedestrian who was in the southbound lane of travel. The driver immediately stopped and called 911. The second vehicle left the scene before police arrival.

Detectives were able to determine that the pedestrian was not standing at the time of the collision. It appears the pedestrian was lying in the roadway for an unknown reason. There is no evidence at this time showing the pedestrian had been previously injured or struck by another vehicle prior to being hit by the Volkswagen. Speed does not appear to be a factor in the collision. The pedestrian was not in a crosswalk and no citations have been issued to the driver. The vehicle that left the scene was not located. Detectives are uncertain if the occupant(s) of that vehicle were somehow involved, knew the victim or were a witness to the collision. Anyone with information is asked to call 88-CRIME.
