Will There Be Heavier Traffic Due To Monday Night Football?

The Arizona Department of Transportation had advised the public to expect heavier afternoon rush hour traffic on West Valley freeways as the Arizona Cardinals play host to Monday Night Football on September 25. The #takeaknee campaign by the NFL reportedly drove down attendance at Sunday’s games across the country.

According to Sports Media Watch, “For the second straight week, the NFL on CBS sank double-digits from last year. The Week 2 NFL singleheader window delivered an 8.4 rating and 14.5 million viewers on CBS Sunday, down 24% in ratings and viewership from last year on FOX (11.0, 19.2M) and down 14% and 13% respectively from 2015 on CBS (9.8, 16.7M).”

Should the public remain interested in the Cardinals and Dallas Cowboys game scheduled to start at 5:30 p.m., Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) offers the following tips:

In Glendale, drivers using Interstate 10 west from downtown Phoenix and the Loop 101 (Agua Fria Freeway) should allow extra travel time and consider starting their trips earlier or later than anticipated game traffic.

Ticketholders driving from north Scottsdale and north Phoenix should consider taking Loop 101 west and south to University of Phoenix Stadium rather than routes that would put them on westbound I-10. Freeway message boards will carry critical updates on current and anticipated traffic conditions as well as recommended exits.

Drivers can get traffic updates through the Arizona Department of Transportation’s Twitter account (@ArizonaDOT), via ADOT’s Arizona Traveler Information site at az511.gov and by calling 511. Information on Glendale and Phoenix traffic conditions is available via Twitter at @GlendaleAZPD and @phxstreettrans.
