This week, Maricopa County Superior Court Judge Margaret Mahoney dismissed a legal challenge brought by school voucher supporters in their effort to prevent voters from having a say on the expansion of Arizona’s school voucher program.
Judge Mahoney found that the plaintiffs lacked standing.
Voters will be able to weigh-in on the expansion of the Empowerment Scholarship Account (ESA) program in the November General Election.
Save Our Schools Arizona, an organization made up of mostly parents and teachers opposed to the expansion of the ESA program, gathered over 100,000 signatures to get the issue on the ballot.
“This is a victory for our grassroots group but more importantly, it’s a victory for Arizona. Thanks to this ruling, voters will get a chance to say how we want our tax dollars spent: do we vote no on Proposition 305 and invest in the public schools and teachers educating our future workforce or do we vote yes to subsidize private schools and special interests? Now the people of Arizona will get to decide.” said Dawn Penich-Thacker, SOS AZ spokeswoman.
