Langhofer To Testify At Freedom Of Speech On College Campuses Hearing

Alliance Defending Freedom Senior Counsel Tyson Langhofer, director of the ADF Center for Academic Freedom, will testify Tuesday before two House subcommittees on the subject of free speech at a joint hearing titled “Challenges to the Freedom of Speech on College Campuses: Part II.”

Other experts testifying at the joint hearing include Allison Stanger, the Middlebury College professor who was hospitalized after an angry mob physically attacked her in the process of assaulting political scientist Charles Murray, and Robbie P. George, McCormick Professor of Jurisprudence and Director of the James Madison Program in American Ideals and Institutions at Princeton University.

“Unfortunately, our colleges and universities are not the marketplace of ideas that they are supposed to be,” Langhofer said. “Public universities and colleges spend millions of dollars every year on all kinds of diversity initiatives. Yet, in spite of this diversity, public universities are some of the most ideologically intolerant places in the entire country. Why is that? I believe that it’s a lack of intellectual diversity—diversity of thought. Uniformity of thought breeds intolerance.”

The Subcommittee on Healthcare, Benefits, and Administrative Rules and the Subcommittee on Intergovernmental Affairs, which are hosting the joint hearing, are both under the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform.
