On Thursday, Meghan McCain tweeted that she was heading home to be with family. Her father, Sen. John McCain is battling terminal cancer and his daughter thanked followers compassion at this time.

Wednesday was the last day for Arizona Governor Doug Ducey to call for a special election to replace the ailing senator. Few believed the senator would relinquish his grasp on the office until such a time as a replacement could be chosen by appointment rather than the voters. He has not returned to D.C. since he left for the Christmas break.
Other than a stint in a Phoenix hospital, the senator has been staying at the family’s Cornville, Arizona compound since before Christmas.
According to various news reports, the governor and his wife visited with the senator yesterday.
A report in Newsmax that the governor was considering appointing McCain’s wife Cindy to his senate seat sparked outrage. Ducey’s challenger in the Republican Primary, former Secretary of State Ken Bennett vowed today that he would not appoint Cindy to the seat should it become vacant while he is governor.
The senator’s most memorable and recent official act in office was giving a late night thumbs down to the skinny repeal of Obamacare. Arizonans had been struggling with a collapsing Obamacare marketplace and the senator’s dramatic vote ensured that members of Arizona’s middle-class would continue to struggle with rising healthcare premiums.
Meghan McCain told the story in a recent HBO documentary about her father’s healthcare vote. According to Meghan, doctors had warned her father of the potential health risks associated with flying back to D.C. for the vote. He ignored his doctor’s advice and returned to D.C. and cast the decisive vote that would guarantee that middle-class Arizonans would continue to be denied affordable care. Meghan tweeted later that she was proud of her father’s vote.
