As the most prominent leader of Arizona’s #RedforEd movement distances himself from controversial politics, a more notorious member of the movement is ramping up the controversy by cozying to Stormy Daniels.
According to the Washington Free Beacon, #RedforEd leader Noah Karvelis is now making an effort to distance himself from socialist groups on social media.
“One account unfollowed by Karvelis was the official account for the Party for Socialism and Liberation, which describes itself as “a revolutionary Marxist organization in the United States,” reported the Free Beacon. “Its website features posters celebrating former dictators such as Cuba’s Fidel Castro and Venezuela’s Hugo Chavez, and promoting terrorism aimed at Israel. It also presents a “10-point program” for liberation, which includes steps such as “Save the planet—End capitalism,” “Seize the banks—Jail Wall Street criminals,” and “Defend our Unions.”
“Karvelis also said he deleted an old tweet that suggested a friend of his “take control of the means of production” at his place of work and “overthrow the system” on his boss,” according to the Free Beacon report. “The tweet included this GIF of murderous Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin.”
Reps. Kelly Townsend and Maria Syms both questioned the political motives of #RedforEd during a debate in the Arizona House of Representatives over teacher pay increases. Syms called out Karvelis in an article in the Arizona Republic for his socialist leanings.
Townsend turned her concerns into action and voted against the pay increases proposed by Governor Doug Ducey. Prior to voting no, Townsend had proposed amendments that would have increased the current penalty for using school resources to promote a particular agenda.
In response, Leonard “Lennie” Clark, a member of the Green Party and #RedforEd “filed paperwork with the Arizona Secretary of State’s office to form two political action committees: “Stormy Daniels To Replace Kelly Townsend Committee” and “Stormy Daniels For Az Governor 2020,” according to the Phoenix New Times.
Clark, who shows up regularly at the Legislature and Phoenix City Council meetings, has earned a reputation as a good humored man whose messages are largely nonsensical.
Clark told Phoenix New Times that Daniels, a porn star, was “of a high ethical and moral fiber, and she’s exactly the type of person that I would hope Mesa citizens in Ms. Townsend’s district would consider.”
“Impressed by her highly publicized war with Trump, Clark said that he has reached out to Daniels on Twitter,” reported the New Times. “He plans to meet with friends to start a social media campaign to convince Daniels to run for office in Arizona.
For her part, Townsend laughed off Clark’s stunt, but questioned why someone like Clark who constantly complains of government abuse would abuse government resources for a stunt.
“I am continually amazed by the behavior and message from members of the RedForEd movement. The most recent effort by Mr. Clark makes a mockery out of the election process,” said Townsend. “I feel confident that he does not represent the teachers, who truly wanted positive change, but he is yet one more assault on decency when it comes to the American way of life. As for Noah Karvelis, I am glad his true intentions are finally being exposed and I once again, call on all teachers to denounce his affiliation with socialism and Marxism, and urge them to find new leadership. As he drums-up efforts to strike again in October, he will only further erode what had once been robust empathy for the teachers, which is not what they want. There’s still time to backtrack on this thing and start over with reasonable leadership that represents most of the great teachers I know and admire.”
