Tucson Adult Care Home Owner Arrested For Elder Abuse

A report of elder abuse at Angelique’s Adult Care Home is being actively investigated by Tucson Police. On July 25, 2018, just before 1:30 p.m., Tucson Police officers and members of the Tucson Fire Department responded to a check welfare call from a caregiver at the home.

The caregiver said the facility did not appear to have air conditioning and the temperature was roughly 100 degrees inside the residence. The Tucson Fire Department arrived on scene and located nine residents, ranging from ages 64-86 years-old, inside. Paramedics immediately began assessing the residents. Five residents were transported to a local hospital for further evaluation. The other four residents were moved to other care home facilities.

Detectives learned the facility cares for vulnerable adults that are either at different stages of hospice or who require care 24 hours a day. A nurse of one of the patients learned about the possibility the air conditioner was not working at the facility and responded to check on the patient. The nurse observed the house was extremely hot and the residents appeared to be in distress. The nurse called 911 immediately.

The detectives learned the business owner, identified as 71-year-old Cynthia Hermann, knew the air conditioning unit had not been working for several days. The temperature in Tucson over the last several days had been over 100 degrees.

Hermann was arrested for 5 counts of Vulnerable Adult Abuse (a Class 4 Felony) and 9 counts of Endangerment (a Class 6 Felony). She was transported and booked into the Pima County Jail.
