Maricopa County 11-Year-Old Kills Grandmother, Commits Suicide

On Saturday, November 3, 2018, just after 5pm the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office received a call for service from a male who stated his 11-year-old grandson, had shot and killed his wife, 65-year-old Yvonne Woodard and then shot himself.

Deputies contacted the caller Doyle Hebert who advised he and his wife had full custody of their 11-year-old grandson. Doyle told MCSO detectives they asked their grandson to clean his room and pick up after himself throughout the day, as he was being stubborn about it. Doyle and his wife then sat down on their couch, in their living room, to watch television. While doing so, the grandson came up behind them and shot Yvonne in the back of the head, with a handgun which belonged to the grandfather.

Doyle said after Yvonne was shot, he ran after the grandson but then returned to where his wife was, in order render first aid. Seconds later, Doyle heard another gunshot and saw the grandson take a few steps and then collapse to the ground; the grandson had shot himself. Doyle went over to where the grandson was lying, retrieved the gun and called 9-1-1.

In the preliminary stages of this investigation there had been no previous signs that the grandson might harm someone or himself and there was no cause for concern prior to this event.
