Ovidio Ramirez Gomez, age 20, was swimming with family and friends near the shoreline of Operations Cove near Scorpion Bay Marina at the Lake Pleasant Regional Park when he lost his life on Monday, May 27, 2019 at approximately 4:01 p.m.

According to the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office, young Ovidio decided to swim further out into the cove, and became distressed and went under the water. People from shore attempted to swim to Ovidio however, according to the Sheriff’s Office, they were not good swimmers and could not make it.

Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) Lake Patrol detectives, who arrived by boat, set a marker buoy in the area that family members were pointing towards the middle of the cove. As the buoy was set by one of the Lake Patrol detectives, he saw the victim in the water on the bottom.

The Lakes detective jumped in 7.5 feet of water and recovered the victim. Deputies on shore began CPR. Peoria Fire arrived on scene and took over lifesaving measures. The victim was pronounced deceased on scene despite continuing life saving measures.

Lake Patrol Detectives responded and assumed the investigation. Evidence gathered at this point does not suggest any alcohol, drugs, or foul play.
