Maricopa County — Alonzo Ferguson, a conspirator in a deadly and unsuccessful plan to rob an armored car was convicted on Monday of first degree murder and attempted armed robbery. Ferguson’s co-conspirators being shot and killed by the guard.

Ferguson is set to be sentenced on January 17, 2020.

According to the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office, in early 2014, Ferguson hatched a plan to rob an armored vehicle. Ferguson methodically conducted surveillance of an ATM and the procedure that an armored car employee followed to replenish the ATM. Ferguson selected a team of four, assigned them their specific roles in the crime and supplied them with the weapon used in the commission of the attempted robbery.

On April 25, 2014, Ferguson’s team put the plan into action. As the armed robbery unfolded, the armored vehicle guard fought back, firing his own weapon and killing one of the co-conspirators, after which, the group fled.

Law enforcement was able through cell phone analysis of both his work and personal cell phones, to determine that Ferguson was found to be in communication with the players throughout the crime, and one of the co-defendants indicated that Ferguson was the one calling the shots.

Ferguson’s DNA was found on a rifle and magazine discarded near the scene by one of the co-defendants, who also identified him through a photographic line-up as the person who drove him and the deceased to the scene and who provided them with the rifle.

“The defendant planned and executed a violent scheme that resulted in the loss of life,” said Maricopa County Attorney Allister Adel in a press release. “Today’s verdict holds him accountable as the key conspirator to this brazen crime.”
