Maricopa County Man Takes His Own Life In Holding Cell

The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the apparent suicide of a man in a Sheriff’s Office Cave Creek Substation holding cell.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, on Friday September 18, at approximately 1:40 p.m., deputies responded to a call regarding a Violation of an Order of Protection. Upon Sheriff’s deputies determined that Scott McKay, age 62, did not have permission to be at the residence and subsequently arrested the him for Trespassing.

Once at the substation, deputies placed him in a holding cell as they processed booking paperwork.

A short time later, deputies found him “unconscious with an item of clothing around his neck, applied consistent with self-hanging,” according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies immediately removed the item and performed life saving measures as paramedics responded. McKay was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.
