A suspect in the murder of 24-year-old Xzavia Williams is in custody as the result of the joint efforts of the Mesa Police Department, the U.S. Marshals Joint East Texas Fugitive Task Force, and the Arizona WANTED Violent Offender Task Force.

On January 28, 2021 Cherdon Mitchell was taken into custody in Frisco, Texas by the U.S. Marshals Joint East Texas Fugitive Task Force after receiving a request for assistance from the Arizona WANTED Violent Offender Task Force. He is being held on a $500,000 bond.

According to the Mesa Police Department, on January 15, 2021 just before 2:00 a.m. officers were on a traffic stop around 435 E. 2nd St Mesa, AZ when they heard a gunshot. Officers began searching the area just as dispatch received a call for service at this location. When officers arrived, they located a female, alter identified as Xzavia Williams, with a gunshot wound. She was pronounced deceased on scene.

Mesa Police Department’s Homicide Unit responded to the scene and began their investigation to find Xzavia’s killer.

During the investigation, detectives were able to access video surveillance obtained from the apartment complex where Xzavia was murdered. The video showed Mitchell and his vehicle. It also showed Mitchell holding a white Styrofoam cup, which was found in a bush by Xzavia’s apartment.

A canvass of the area gave detectives further video of Mitchell and his vehicle at a Circle K, prior to the shooting.

After 5 days of investigation, DNA analysis of the Styrofoam cup provided detectives with Mitchell’s name .

Cherdon’s driver’s license photo and registered vehicle were compared to what the apartment complex and Circle K video captured and were found to be a match.

Immediately, detectives sought and were granted a 2nd Degree Murder warrant for the arrest of Cherdon.

“The swift development of intelligence and teamwork displayed by all agencies involved led to the arrest of this dangerous fugitive,” said United States Marshal David Gonzales. “The Marshals Service is proud to assist our partners to ensure the accused is held accountable, wherever they may flee.”
