A Hereford man who admitted firing a gun near his roommate in 2018 in hopes of encouraging him to move out will be back in court next month to set a trial date for a case in which he is accused of stabbing a woman last year.

Charles Christian Perdue is charged with three felonies stemming from a July 8, 2020 incident in which he allegedly struck a female friend in the face and then stabbed her in the knee twice with tin snips. He remains out of custody pending trial after posting a $75,000 bond.

Perdue, 39, was sentenced in January 2019 to serve four years of supervised probation for reckless endangerment for the firearm incident and for possession of Psilocin mushrooms. But in July 2020 his probation officer notified the court of six alleged violations, which included the recent stabbing as well as a domestic violence incident from October 2019.

The trial date for the new charges will be announced April 8, the same day Perdue will have a hearing on the probation violations. He faces a short prison sentence for the 2018 convictions unless the judge decides to reinstate Perdue to probation pending the outcome of the new case.

Court records show the woman assaulted at Purdue’s home was an acquaintance who was reportedly there to help him with his home business. The two had an argument, after which she says Perdue tried to take her clothes off.

“She started to fight back and Charles got angrier,” Det. Todd Borquez noted in a report. “He grabbed her left knee and twisted it. She started fighting back and he started to hit her in the head and face area.”

The woman was able to get to a bathroom in the house where she attempted to hide, but Perdue allegedly broke down the door. Borquez’s report notes damage to the door and a significant amount of blood on the bathroom floor and bedroom.

Perdue, who has been previously treated for PTSD, became the subject of a search. Deputies later discovered Perdue had arranged to be admitted to the VA Hospital in Tucson where he was placed in a psychiatric unit for several days.

Borquez arranged to take Perdue into custody on July 17, 2020 after his release from the VA. Court records show the Cochise County Attorney’s Office have tried to resolve the new charges and the probation violations through a global plea deal.

Purdue rejected the offer, leading Judge Timothy Dickerson to conduct a hearing on Feb. 16 to ensure the defendant understood the judge’s options as to the probation case and the possible prison sentence Perdue faces if found guilty at trial for the stabbing incident.
