House Unanimously Passes Bill Moving Arizona’s Income Tax Filing Deadline

arizona capitol

PHOENIX – On Wednesday, the Arizona House of Representatives approved SB1297, a bill that was originally about optometric services but
was amended with legislative language to delay the state income tax return filing deadline. The bill provides uniformity with new federal tax filing deadlines.

The bill passed on a unanimous vote.

In March, the Internal Revenue Service announced it had postponed this year’s April 15 deadline for filing federal income tax returns to May 17, citing the COVID-19 pandemic and recent changes in tax law. Arizona’s current state tax deadline is April 15.

The bill allows the following tax credits to be applied to an individual’s TY 2020 or TY 2021 income tax return:
a) the Credit for Contribution to Qualifying Charitable Organizations;
b) the Credit for Contributions to School Tuition Organizations (STOs);
c) the Public School Extracurricular Activity Fee Tax Credit; and
d) the Credit for Contributions to Certified STOs.
