The Tucson Police Department is actively investigating an early-morning shooting that took the life of Mark Edward Doe in Downtown Tucson. Mr. Doe was killed while trying to stop a robbery.

The suspects remain at large.

According to the Tucson Police Department, on April 25, 2021, just after 2:00 a.m., several 911 calls were received reporting a shooting at the multilevel parking garage located at 345 E. Congress St. Officers from Operations Division West, TPD K9 and the Air Unit were dispatched to the area.

Upon arrival, officers were directed to the 52-year-old Mr. Doe on the first floor, near the exit. Officers found Mr. Doe with obvious gunshot trauma and immediately began rendering aid until Tucson Fire arrived and pronounced him deceased on scene.

Detectives learned from several witness interviews that two unknown males had approached and attempted to rob multiple victims in the garage. After several attempts, the suspects, armed with a handgun, carjacked a white Nissan pickup truck. The suspects collided with several vehicles as they drove the truck towards the garage exit. Once at the exit, several individuals, including Mr. Doe, attempted to intervene and confronted the suspects.

Mr. Doe was shot during the confrontation and the suspects drove out of the garage fleeing the scene. No other injuries were reported at the parking garage. Investigators obtained video surveillance of the incident and were able to broadcast a description of the suspects and pickup to officers.

Several hours later, at approximately 12:00 p.m., a TPD Detective located the stolen pickup near E. Speedway Blvd. and N. 4th Ave. – solely occupied by the driver. Patrol officers responded to assist and attempted to pull the truck over; however, the truck fled from officers and a pursuit ensued.

As the pursuit approached the 4000 block of E. 22nd St., several rounds were fired at pursuing officers from the truck. Officers did not return fire and continued the pursuit. The suspect traveled at a high rate of speed to the 5100 block E. 22nd St. where the truck was abandoned in a parking lot.

Officers received information that the suspect fled on foot into a nearby apartment complex. Tucson SWAT personnel were called to the scene and conducted an extensive search of the area. The search was conducted with the assistance of the Air Unit, K9 Unit and several officers from across the city. At 4:00 p.m., the suspect was not located and the search was concluded.
