On Monday, Arizona Treasurer, Kimberly Yee released a video announcing her campaign to be Arizona’s next Governor. The announcement was long expected by Valley politicos, although it came as a surprise to some who had expected her to stay put in a relatively safe Treasurer’s race.

“I’m running for Governor to put Arizona first, to ensure our children have the same opportunities and freedoms my family found here, and that starts with securing our southern border,” Yee said in a press release. “My family’s story is about legal immigration in this great country, where they found success by opening a grocery store in Arizona in the 1930’s that thrived and served the community for over 60 years. But today, opportunities like theirs are under attack by socialists, woke corporations and corrupt, establishment politicians. Join me in securing the freedoms and values that have made our country great and putting Arizona first.”

Yee has worked hard to rebrand herself as a conservative in preparation for her gubernatorial run. She alienated many conservatives in the Republican Party when she offered a full-throated support for Common Core as conservative members of the Arizona Legislature were attempting to eradicate it. She cited her work for California Governors Pete Wilson and Arnold Schwarzenegger, both moderate Republicans, in her defense of her controversial position.

Yee served as executive fellow for the Office of the California State Superintendent of Public Instruction, program and policy analyst for Wilson on the California State Board of Education. She served as deputy cabinet secretary for the Office of Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, before becoming director of communications and government affairs for the Arizona State Treasurer’s Office.

Yee was appointed by the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors to the Arizona House of Representatives to replace fellow Republican Doug Quelland after he was ousted for violating Clean Election Limits.  She was later elected to the State Senate.
