Registered Sex Offender Arrested In Sierra Vista After Children Found Beaten

A registered sex offender arrested Monday night in Sierra Vista after two young children were injured during what investigators call “a beating” is scheduled for a court hearing Wednesday on whether he should be released on bail to await trial.

Reynaldo Enrique Alvarez was booked into the Cochise County jail on multiple counts of aggravated assault, child endangerment, and child abuse, all with a domestic violence tag. The charges do not appear to be related to sexual misconduct, according to Sierra Vista Det. John Andela.

Alvarez, 34, is a Level 2 sex offender following a conviction in Cochise County for a 2006 incident of sexual conduct with a minor. Details of the charges were not available at press time, but Alvarez was sentenced to one year in jail and five years of probation which he completed in 2012.

Court records show Alvarez was taken into custody Monday evening shortly after officers responded to a report of several children being injured in a residential area northeast of State Route 92 and Avenida Cochise. Four children, ages 5 and under, were transported to Canyon Vista Medical Center for medical examinations. Two of the children appeared to be uninjured, but one child suffered several facial injuries.

The fourth child was admitted for treatment of a possible spinal injury, as well as a probable bone fracture, several facial injuries, and multiple bruises.

After Monday’s arrest, a justice of the peace ordered Alvarez held in jail without bail. The sole purpose of Wednesday’s hearing before Judge Timothy Dickerson of the Cochise County Superior Court is to find out whether the Cochise County Attorney’s Office wants a no-bail order to remain in place.

For the no-bail order to continue, Alvarez must be provided an evidentiary hearing within one week to present information to Dickerson that there are less restrictive means available to assure Alvarez will appear for future court proceedings, as well as to protect witnesses, the victims, and the community as a whole.

If the prosecutor is agreeable on Wednesday to have Dickerson set bail, then Alvarez and his court-appointed attorney Josh Jones can present arguments on what that amount should be.

Alvarez is scheduled to appear for the hearing via a video feed from the jail.
