On Friday, Tech billionaire Peter Thiel’s employee, Blake Masters, entered the Arizona GOP U.S. Senate Primary race. The move signals an expanded effort by the billionaire to return control of the Senate to Republicans.
Democrats say Masters’ entrance “ensures that Arizona Republicans will have a long, drawn-out, and messy primary on their hands.”
Thiel’s support for Masters follows the entrance of JD Vance into Ohio’s GOP U.S. Senate Primary race. Vance previously worked for Thiel as well.

On his website, Masters wrote that his “overarching professional goal has always been to find the most interesting work possible and to do it well.”
It was rumored that Masters would be announcing his entrance into the race on the Tucker Carlson Show on Fox on Thursday, that did not happen. Instead he filed his candidacy with the FEC on Friday.
One railbird told the Arizona Daily Independent that “Masters will have to run his campaign on the national level because virtually no one knows him in Arizona.” The railbird said that they believed “another Thiel ally just took a seat on the board of Wick Communications, which probably won’t hurt him with local media coverage.”
Masters grew up in Tucson and graduated from Green Fields Country Day School. He attended Stanford University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree and a law degree.
Masters and his family moved to Tucson in 2018. He had considered running against Martha McSally for the GOP nomination in 2020, believing as did many in the GOP that she was unelectable, but decided against it.
