Tombstone Man Charged With Sexual Abuse Of Boys Dating Back Nearly 40 Years

James (Jim) Dixon

A Tombstone man arrested in July on multiple child molestation charges dating back to 1982 can await trial out of custody, but first he must post a $400,000 bond, a Cochise County judge ruled this week.

James Roger Dixon has been in the Cochise County jail since July 27 when he was charged with 12 felonies including child sex trafficking, child molestation, and facilitating child prostitution. The alleged offenses occurred between 1982 and 2018 and involved three male victims, according to court documents.

According to public records, Det. Alexander Dolhyj of the Cochise County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) started investigating Dixon in mid-April after a young adult filed a report with the Tombstone Marshal’s Office concerning sexual abuse involving Dixon, who reportedly volunteered over the years with the Boy Scouts of America and Little League.

Judge Timothy Dickerson ordered Dixon be held without bail until a bail eligibility review hearing could be conducted. That hearing took place Aug. 2, with Dixon participating by video from the jail.

The only problem was that Cochise County officials still had not arranged for an attorney to represent Dixon, who could not legally be held more than seven days after his arrest without a hearing on whether bail was appropriate. As a result, Dickerson set aside his earlier no bail order and announced a series of conditions Dixon will have to comply with if he posts a $400,000 cash or secured bond.

Those conditions include no direct or indirect contact with the three victims named in the grand jury indictment, and no contact with anyone under age 18. A 15-year-old boy was in Dixon’s home when deputies took Dixon into custody, a CCSO spokesperson said.

Dixon has another hearing slated for Aug. 9 at which time he will be formally arraigned by Dickerson. A trial date could be set at that time.
