San Carlos Man In Custody After Shooting, Injuring Globe Police Officer

A San Carlos man, 30-year-old Perry Roy Tonto, is in custody for shooting and injuring a Globe Police officer.

According to the Globe Police Department, on August 27, 2021 at 4:51 p.m., a report was received with a 911 Dispatch Center about Tonto making threats towards law-enforcement officers. The caller said they dropped off Tonto, who was intoxicated, in the area of McDonald’s and that he had loaded weapon on him and said that he wanted to shoot an officer.

Globe Police Department officers and a Gila County Sheriff’s deputy responded to the area but could not find Tonto.

A second 911 call came in several minutes later from a nearby residence reporting that a suspicious man was trespassing in his backyard and was armed with a handgun.

Officers found Tonto hiding behind a storage shed on an empty lot in the area. As officers exited their vehicles to make contact, Tonto began firing on officers. A brief exchange of gunfire took place between the officers and Tonto.

One officer sustained non-threatening non-life-threatening gunshot wounds and is currently hospitalized due to his injuries.

Tonto was struck by gunfire as well and was transported for medical treatment. Tonto was later released from the hospital with subsequently booked into the Gila County jail for attempted homicide of a law enforcement officer, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, endangerment and prohibited position possession of a weapon.
