With the U.S. Marshals Service actively looking for him, accused child murderer Daniel Jawara Foster showed up at the Cochise County jail last Saturday to turn himself in.

Foster, 30, self-surrendered at 7:18 p.m. and was taken into custody without incident. The surrender was not prearranged with detectives, according to Sierra Vista Police Cpl. Paul Youman, the lead investigator on the case.

In August, Foster was indicted along with his former girlfriend Alysha Rae Hop on a first degree murder charge in connection to an alleged act of child abuse which caused the June 2020 death of Hop’s son, Kenny “Bubs” Gamble. Both are also charged with the alleged abuse of two other of Hop’s children.

Youman declined to comment on what may have prompted Foster to turn himself in now, or whether anyone is under investigation for aiding Foster in evading law enforcement the last several months. However, Youman previously confirmed to Arizona Daily Independent that federal agents were pursuing Foster, with tips generated and investigated in multiple states including Texas as well as Florida where Foster has family.

A well-known bounty hunter, Scott Bernstein, had also recently been involved in the search, helping to bring national attention to the case.

Hop self-surrendered to police back on Sept. 1. She and Foster remain in custody of the Cochise County Sheriff’s Office in lieu of $1 million in bail each. Prosecution of the cases has been assigned to Deputy County Attorney Raymond Haight.

Court records show Foster is also charged with aggravated assault and kidnapping for his alleged involvement in an unrelated domestic violence incident with a former girlfriend in July 2018.
