Arizona’ representatives on Capitol Hill are earning good marks for compliance with the STOCK Act with two glaring exceptions – Sen. Mark Kelly and Rep. Raul Grijalva.
Insider.com did a deep dive into Arizona’s elected officials and staff members and found both the Grijalva and Kelly teams bordering on noncompliance.
In addition to their own STOCK Act violations, members of Congress were graded on whether their top congressional staffers themselves violated the STOCK Act. Insider reporters obtained and analyzed the certified financial disclosures of all congressional staffers required by law to file such disclosures with Congress. Insider then analyzed these documents to determine whether congressional staffers filed complete reports and complied with the STOCK Act’s disclosure deadlines.
Members of Congress with no staffer violations were awarded 4 points, 1 violation received 3 points, 2 violations received 2 points, and 3 violations received 1 point. Four or more staffer violations meant the member received 0 points on this measure. That score received a 30% weight in Insider’s final composite index.
According to the new Insider report at least 182 high-ranking congressional staffers and 48 members of congress have violated a federal conflict-of-interest law called the STOCK Act with their personal stock trade(s).
