AZ Legislature Week In Review – Work Stalled, Governor Signs Non-Controversial Bills

WEEK ENDING APRIL 15, 2022

arizona capitol

Who would have thought that in an election year, on the 96th day of the legislative session, we would be so far from adjournment? If we are to believe those who are supposed to know this business, the current session could end up being nearly as long as the last, which is not a good thing.

This is no ordinary election year. Because of redistricting, every incumbent legislator will be running in a district with a different voter composition. In some districts, that difference will be minor, but in many others it will be substantial.

From a conservative republican perspective, the next election could be disastrous. This year we need to increase conservative republican representation because this is the only way that we can overcome the irresponsible behavior of legislators like Boyer, who can, and do, single-handedly torpedo the process unless his unreasonable demands are met.

It is this kind of irresponsible behavior that has kept good bills from passing, and slowed down the process to a crawl.

Yet we see that there are some districts in which two conservative-voting republican legislators are battling each other. In each case we will lose one of those legislators. Unless we can make some gains elsewhere, to offset the loss, we are sunk.

Hence the need to finish this session as soon as possible and turn our attention to electing a higher number of good legislators.

GOVERNOR’S SIDE ACTIVITY:

This week, another 15 bills were sent to the governor. By the time you read this, it is likely that action will have been taken already.

The most striking characteristic of the bills sent to the governor is the extremely small amount of bills dealing with core issues, like education, parental rights, election integrity, and government overreach.  Almost 100% of the bills that have made it through the legislature deal with non-controversial issues.
