On Thursday night, Phoenix Police Officer Tyler Moldovan threw the first pitch at the Diamondbacks’ sold out home opener game. Officer Moldovan was accompanied by his wife Chelsea, who helped him throw the ball to catcher Zac Gallen.

A career criminal, Essa Williams, shot Officer Moldovan eight times, including a shot to his head on December 14, 2021.

Williams “continued to shoot the officer even after the officer was on the ground,” according to Maricopa County Prosecutor John Schneider. Essa fought with police officers when they attempted to apprehend him.

Although Officer Moldovan was not expected to survive his injuries, after spending a month on life support, he was able to be sent to a rehabilitation center to recover from his injuries.
