AZ Legislature Week In Review – Week Ending April 7, 2023

Katie Hobbs has just strengthened the belief that the number 13 is unlucky. She did it by inflicting major misery upon our state on this 13th week of the current legislative session.

There is no longer any doubt that she is in a mad race to surpass Napolitano in two areas, number of bills vetoed, and the title of worst Arizona governor ever.

To those ends, she began the week by vetoing seven bills, among them HB2427, HB2472, and HB2477. These bills dealt with enhancement of penalties for assaulting pregnant women, limiting the use of social credits by banks, and protection of the electoral college, respectively.

Then Hobbs ended the week by vetoing eight more bills, dealing with important subjects like water resources, second amendment protection, election integrity, and enhancement of the rights of human beings that survive abortions.

A list of all the bills that Hobbs has vetoed is posted on the legislature’s website, which may be accessed by clicking HERE However, updates of that site take quite a few days, so here is a complete list of the last eight vetoes.

SB1009 – criminal damage; monuments; memorials; statues

SB1074 – tabulating equipment; standards; source codes

SB1253 – sex offender registration; school notification

SB1257 – water resources; assistant director

SB1428 – political subdivisions; gun shows; preemption

HB2322 – early ballots; signatures; guidelines; challenges

HB2415 – active early voting lists; removal

SB1600 – infants; born alive; requirements

Turning our attention to the legislature, we see that there is a lot of full chamber activity, now that the deadline has passed for committee hearings. The House Republicans regularly post press releases dealing with various issues, one of which is what legislative progress has been made. The latest release may be viewed by clicking HERE

This week’s release covers important subjects, like healthcare, education, transportation, safety, children’s protection, and the economy.

Unfortunately, the Senate does not do that, so we must rely on other sources.

One such source is the Peoples Lobbyists. This session we are tracking 250 bills and reporting on what has been happening with them. These are the bills that we regard as having the greatest impact on the citizens of Arizona. To view that report, click HERE
