Phoenix Police Department detectives have booked a man after they took over the investigation into an overnight collision that left another man dead.

On August 13, 2023, around 10:05 p.m. officers responded to the area of 75th Avenue and Thomas Road regarding a collision involving a pedestrian. When officers arrived, they located the adult male pedestrian, identified as 56-year-old Larry Wheet, with serious injuries.

Wheet was transported to a local hospital but he did not survive his injuries and was pronounced deceased. The vehicle involved in the collision, to include the driver identified as 40-year-old James Carter, remained on scene.

Detectives believe Wheet was crossing Thomas Road midblock when he was struck by an eastbound vehicle driven by Carter. At the scene, Carter showed signs of impairment and was processed with DUI.

There were four additional occupants inside of the vehicle along with Carter, two of which were young children. Due to this factor, Carter was booked into jail on Aggravated DUI.
