Maricopa Bonds and Overrides Results: Higher Voter Turnout Resulted in Rejections

More Maricopa school district bonds and budget overrides are on track to pass than not this time around, based on initial results — fifteen districts slated to win their proposed bonds and overrides, while eight failed to do so — with a pattern of higher voter turnout linked to lower approval of bonds and overrides.

22 Maricopa County school districts had bonds and/or overrides. Those bonds and/or overrides that failed had a higher average voter turnout percentage than those bonds and/or overrides that passed: about 25 percent compared to 17 percent, respectively.

However, there was no apparent correlation between voter turnout and margins of victory on bonds or overrides approved.

One district, Mesa Unified School District, split on its approval of a bond and override. Voters approved the bond, while rejecting the budget override continuation.

The three lowest turnouts were Littleton Elementary School District (eight percent), Tolleson Union High School District (nine percent), and Tolleson Elementary High School District (nine percent).

The three highest turnouts were Fountain Hills Unified High School District (46 percent), Litchfield Elementary School District (25 percent), and Liberty Elementary School District (24 percent).
