Arizona Representatives David Schweikert and Juan Ciscomani voted to oust former Rep. George Santos, who has been under fire since his election last fall.

Santos was denied the protections found in the 5th, 6th, 8th and 14th amendments, say critics.

Schweikert’s vote surprised many due to the fact that much like Santos, he was accused of – and admitted to – misusing campaign funds.

In 2020, Schweikert admitted to 11 counts of campaign finance violations, misuse of congressional office funds and pressuring legislative staff to do campaign work, according to the House Ethics Committee.

The Fountain Hills Republican agreed to pay a $50,000 fine in the matter as part of a settlement in which he admitted to the 11 counts and agreed to waive further appeals, the committee’s 103-page report said.

Schweikert claimed before his admission that he welcomed the investigation of what he has said were largely clerical oversights.

This isn’t the first time Schweikert and Ciscomani joined Democrats Ruben Gallego and Greg Stanton.  In May, the duo voted to pass a debt ceiling agreement negotiated between President Biden and former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy.

Reps. Debbie Lesko, Andy Biggs, Paul Gosar, and Eli Crane did not support denying Santos his due process rights.
