Phoenix Police detectives are investigating a collision involving the light rail that left one woman dead and another in the hospital.

According to the Phoenix Police Department, on February 24, 2024, around 11:30 p.m., officers responded to the area of 21st Street and Washington Street regarding a collision that involved the light rail. When officers arrived, they located the vehicle involved in the collision and the two adult female occupants, both of which suffered serious injuries. The driver, identified as 76-year-old Sandra Barbre, was transported to the hospital. She did not survive her injuries and was pronounced deceased. The adult female passenger was also transported to the hospital. She continues to receive treatment and is in critical condition.

Detectives believe that Barbre’s vehicle was either westbound on Washington Street and made a southbound turn in front of the light rail or her vehicle was southbound exiting the I-10 Highway and crossed in front of the light rail causing the collision. The light rail was westbound proceeding through the intersection on a green light.
