An unborn baby has died as a result of injuries from a domestic violence attack in Yavapai County.
According to the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office, on Sunday morning October 27, deputies were called to a home in the Prescott area for a report of a domestic dispute. A Prescott man had thrown his pregnant wife to the floor. During the altercation, there was trauma to the victim’s abdomen. The husband was arrested for assault charges and booked into the Yavapai County jail.
After the woman refused medical attention on scene, she admitted herself to the hospital, where she was informed that the 6-8 week-old unborn child was deceased. After having signs of viability just a few days prior.
Based on that information as well as other information gathered during the investigation, the county attorney’s office added an attempted homicide charge against the husband per the Arizona state law which reads:
“The laws of this state shall be interpreted and construed to acknowledge, on behalf of an unborn child at every stage of development, all rights, privileges, and immunities available to other persons, citizens, and residents of this state, subject only to the Constitution of the United States and decisional interpretations thereof by the United States Supreme Court.”
Further investigation is being conducted which could result in additional charges.
“The Sheriff’s Office would like to extend condolences to the woman who lost her child,” said Sheriff David Rhodes. “I am always grateful to the men and women of the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office who always fight to protect the most vulnerable among us and by holding violent perpetrators accountable.”
This is how law enforcement should operate. Every life is precious.
