On Christmas morning, the Sierra Vista Police Department responded to the area of North Carmichael Avenue and East Theater Drive after a caller reported a dog with a gunshot wound.
When officers arrived at approximately 7:54 a.m., they found a deceased pitbull at Len Roberts Park. A thorough investigation was conducted, and it was determined by witnesses and video surveillance that two pitbulls left their yard and attacked a man and the German shepherd he was walking. The dogs then attacked another man, who was attempting to break up the fight. A passerby saw what was occurring and exited his vehicle with a rifle. One of the dogs initially charged after him and then continued to attack the German shepherd. The man with the rifle fired one shot at the dog actively attacking the German shepherd, killing the dog instantly.
The man who fired the shot was later contacted and his story confirmed information from the earlier investigation. The man stated he left the area because everybody else did as well. He has not been criminally charged for his involvement.
On Dec. 26, follow up was completed and the second pitbull is now quarantine at the Nancy J. Brua Animal Care Center. The adult female owner of the two pitbulls has been cited for aggressive dogs, under the Arizona Revised Statutes.
Follow-up contact was made with the male walking the German Shepherd, as well. Although the German Shepherd was injured, neither the male nor his dog sought medical attention. The other man who was attacked left the area before officers arrived and his identity is still unknown.
This is an ongoing investigation. The Sierra Vista Police Department is asking anyone with information regarding this case, to call (520) 452-7500.
