Grijalva Urged To Step Down After Missing Key Votes

Arizona Congressman Raul Grijalva has not been seen on Capitol Hill and has not voted in this Congressional session, prompting increasing calls for him to resign his seat.

Residents of Congressional District 7 are concerned that their voices are not being heard on important legislation because Grijalva has only appeared to vote on three days since he was re-elected in November 2024.

Notably, Grijalva, a progressive Democrat, was the second House Democrat to publicly urge President Biden to leave the race for President last year, citing Biden’s “precarious state” after the former President’s debate performance against President Donald Trump.

At the time, Grijalva described a second Trump presidency as “very, very dangerous.” Yet, Grijalva, commonly referred to as “El Jefe,” has not been available to join the fight against Trump who he has characterized as an “anti-democratic, authoritarian despot.”

Even the Congressman’s biggest fans are calling for him to step aside. Progressive Democrat Arizona Daily Star columnist, Tim Steller, most recently called for the ailing Congressman to make room for new blood.

The 76-year-old Democrat, serving his 12th term in Congress, told KOLD-TV in Tucson that he wouldn’t run again after his November win. He said he wasn’t going to abandon his office once he returned, but “it’s time for someone else. It’s time for someone younger.”

His comments fed rumors that he was simply running for the spot in order to have his daughter, Pima County Supervisor Adelita Grijalva, fill it at the most politically convenient moment – a moment that would best facilitate her entry.

In 1988, as noted on his website, Grijalva “was elected to the Pima County Board of Supervisors, where he served for the next 15 years, chairing the Board for two of those years. Raúl resigned his seat on the Board of Supervisors in 2002 to seek office in Arizona’s newly created Seventh Congressional District.”

In October 2023, Cronkite News reported that Grijalva had “missed more than 300 votes” since he announced his illness in February 2023. Congress has only been in session since January 6, and he has since missed an additional 27 votes.

  1. If he’s not doing his job he shouldn’t be getting paid. But since his votes would most likely be all against the Trump agenda, it’s better he doesn’t vote.

  2. His reelection shows how dumb AZ voters in his district are. Sorry, but someone has to say it load and clear.

  3. Good job covering this. AZ local legacy media is obviously burying it because one less democrat able to vote in Congress makes Trump and Rs stronger. Keep it up.

I’s bet they can’t force him to resign because his people know too much dirt

  4. These last few months have been the most beneficial, for AZ, of his 12yr tenure. Sadly, the Dems will find someone worse to fill his seat. Hopefully, social changes will turn that seat red in the near future.

  5. It’s important to step down when you’re physically unable to do the work or can’t give it 100%. We’ve seen this with President Biden and Senator Diane Feinstein. Politicians are delusional if they think that at age 80, 90, or 100, they are the only ones who can do their jobs.

  6. “Grijalva, commonly referred to as “El Jefe, but most recently as the ‘turd’ is and has been a waste of time and space. He is trying to posture for his daughter another waste of time to fill the position WITHOUT being ELECTED just as he was. Long on promises and extremely short on fulfillment of the promises he is only getting elected by the d behind the name. Remove the party affiliation and see how he would fare.

  7. Concerned that their voices aren’t being heard?? If he does show up OUR voices STIll aren’t being heard. Goodbye Rahooie and take your commie friends and family with you.

  8. Correction he has missed almost 509 votes and will miss many more for our district even if he steps down. We in CD7 deserve representationk

  9. I don’t care for his politics, especially his leaning towards Marxism and his association with the Terrorists Cartels. Let him recover and return to work or go to his next Marxist journey as a seated member of the Congress.

  10. No doubt, the one person that most caused Tucson and Pima County to be the biggest and poorest sh*t city and county in the country.

  11. If the old communist had any honor, why would have resigned before November’s election……

  12. Greedy hypocrite and power hungry sick old man refuses to step down but I can guarantee it will be worse with his POS daughter in his place.

    OMG…here comes the nightmare!

      • The article was about Congressman Raul Grijalva, I don’t know why you are obsessed with Trump.

      • I believe it’s up to our “Numbskull” Gov. She has to appoint someone from the same party.

    • His daughter will not replace him-the worthless mayor of Tucson will. Ralph is a fighter- having fought D-O-A Diabetes-Obesity and Alcoholism for over a decade. Ralph is the most successful ANCHOR BABY of all time tie.

      • So, I agree with your comment 100% and maybe it will be Regina. Either way we’re still f___ed!!

The only good that could come from that would be a new Mayor although the sheep voters in Tucson will probably elect someone just as bad!
