Accidental Shooting Leaves Teen Dead, Mother in Jail for Child Abuse

Phoenix Police Department detectives are investigating an accidental shooting that left one teenager dead and his mother facing criminal charges.

According to the Phoenix Police Department, on August 10, 2025, at approximately 10:45 p.m., officers responded to a motel in the area of 27th Avenue and Union Hills Drive regarding a shooting. When officers arrived, they found an unresponsive teenage male with an apparent gunshot wound. The Phoenix Fire Department arrived on the scene and pronounced the teenager deceased. Officers detained multiple people inside the motel room and learned that the victim’s mother, 40-year-old Jewell Griffen, left the area shortly after police arrived.

Griffen later returned to the scene and was taken into custody.

Homicide detectives responded and took over the investigation. After processing the scene and speaking to witnesses, detectives learned the victim and his teenage brother were allowed by Griffen to handle a firearm while inside their motel room. A few moments later, the firearm discharged, resulting in one of the boys being struck. Griffen was booked on multiple charges to include child abuse.
