An Arizona State University (ASU) professor accused Christians and the late Charlie Kirk of being “fascists” following his assassination and urged the left to use violence.
Avina said those inspired by Kirk’s legacy were “fascistic” and would use the momentum to target their political opponents. Avina said the left would have to “protect themselves” from the right.
“The fascistic avenge of the right is on the march, and they’re using this particular incident to pummel the rest of us,” said Avina.
Avina also called for those on the left to use violence against their political opponents.
“Today I read a quote by the writer Roberto Bolano where he says there’s a time for reciting poetry and there’s a time for fists, and this is definitely a time for fists,” said Avina.
Bolano was a Chilean author and socialist who claimed he participated in the Chilean socialist revolution in the 1970s. Some anti-fascist activists cite and praise Bolano’s works.

Avina is an associate professor of Latin American history within the School of Historical, Philosophical and Religious Studies. Before ASU, Avina taught at Florida State University.
From his perspective, U.S. immigration policy consists of an “anti-migrant brutalization campaign” across both the Trump and Biden administrations, per remarks given in a panel earlier this year.
Avina consistently advocates for the abolition of borders.
“Borders fuel nativist, white supremacist fantasies that underscore much of the civilizational “border talk” […] that dominates United States and European politics today,” wrote Avina in an opinion piece published last year. “Simply bring down the walls and open the gates.”
Geraldo Cadava, a history professor at Northwestern University, commissioned Avina for the article.
Avina made these recent remarks about Kirk and his followers during an episode of the “Millennials Are Killing Capitalism” released earlier this week in a section titled “Airing More Grievances.”

Others featured alongside Avina in the podcast were Nora Barrows-Friedman (journalist and associate editor at “The Electronic Intifada”), Sina Rahmani (Canadian university postdoctoral fellow), Arama Rata (New Zealand university research officer and activist with Aotearoa for Palestine), Lara Sheehi (Qatar institute assistant professor and author), and Jared Ware (reporter and producer of Millennials Are Killing Capitalism).
The podcast regularly fundraises for Palestine, including Lifeline 4 Gaza.
Avina also claimed that the belief Kirk went to heaven following his death, namely those expressed through online AI and other depictions, was sinful. The professor said, as a rule, white Christians were against God.
“Gringo Christians are some of the most blasphemous, sacrilegious people,” said Avina.
Avina described the entire climate of the nation following Kirk’s assassination as “intense” and “weirder than September 11,” even though he dismissed Kirk of having “relative unimportance.”
The professor also claimed Kirk’s speech was “hateful” and criticized those who supported his speech and mourned his death. He expressed concerns that Kirk’s legacy would result in greater support for right-wing beliefs.
“[His death has] been deployed and recontextualized by the revengist right in the region,” said Avina.
Avina also said the government was wrong for killing members of Tren de Aragua transporting narcotics on a speedboat earlier this month.
“They may have just been executed as a form of pre-crime by the U.S. empire that created the preconditions that may have led those people to engage in the illicit economy to begin with,” said Avina.
