Our 7th year, week 5
Folks who watch the legislative process were very thankful that February 9 finally arrived. That was the deadline for new legislative bills to be introduced. By the time the dust had settled, the count was 2,116. That number is not likely to be surpassed any time soon. Nor should it, because if we do some serious head scratching, a very pesky question comes up. If our goal is to have 100-day sessions, this number of bills means that our legislators would have to read slightly over 21 bills a day. Apparently, some of those bills introduced were never meant to be considered, or even read at all.
The biggest legislative news this week was not good. Hobbs vetoed house bill HB2785, the second IRS conformity bill sent to her. This should not be a political matter. We have a code from the federal government. It is our state’s policy to write our code to conform because lots of good things happen when we do.
We are entering the portion of the session when bills begin to trickle out of the legislature and on to the governor, so we will be monitoring her actions. The AZ legislature’s website publishes that information, which may be accessed by clicking on the following links.

Among the bills we are tracking, most of those that saw action passed. There were some delays, but none of them failed.
