Lightning Caused Verde Fire Grows To 1,960 Acres

The Verde Fire grew to approximately 1,960 acres on Sunday, with most of the movement to the northeast and southwest. A helicopter and airtankers were used on Sunday.

Remote and inaccessible ground and excessive heat limits where firefighters can safely engage the fire perimeter.

Monsoon storms are developing around the fire area this afternoon, bring a chance of rain, but also the potential for shifting and gusty winds.

As a precaution, Forest Service Roads along State Highway 87 were closed to prevent the public from driving into several popular areas including: Lower Sycamore, Sugarloaf and Mesquite which are south and east of the Verde Fire.
