Impeachment Strikes Back: Tough Saturday For Arizona’s CD2 Democrats

Shuron Harvey, owner of a small southern Arizona business, View of the Desert Landscaping, protested Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick's vote on articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump.

It was a sad Saturday for Democrats in Arizona Congressional District 2 when more anti-impeachment supporters arrived at a Congress on Your Corner event being hosted by Representative Ann Kirkpatrick than her supporters.

Impeachment opponents and President Trump supporters lined the entrance to St. Phillips Plaza.

Representative Kirkpatrick was met with flags, banners, signs, towels, and jeers from President Trump’s supporters as she arrived at St. Phillips Plaza. While less than 30 of her more ardent supporters took turns to speak one-on-one with Ann, supporters of President Trump and those against the impeachment process outnumbered them approximately 3 to 1 in what is a strong democrat district.

While deputies from the Pima County Sheriff Department were on hand to provide security, the event went off without any problems.

Angel Grandmother Laura Basurto was also in attendance and while attempting to have a seat, almost had the chair removed from underneath her by a Kirkpatrick staffer. When asked to leave the chair by Basurto, the staffer left it and walked away removing empty chairs to prevent other Trump supporters from occupying them.

Basurto is no stranger to Kirkpatrick and her staff. Kirkpatrick attempted to take a selfie with the grieving Latina grandmother in June when she confronted Kirkpatrick and staff about their failure to respond to her calls to Kirkpatrick’s Washington DC and Tucson offices.

An anonymous female donor walked over to the Trump supporters and gave a donation of $49.99 to stay within Federal Election Commission compliance for reporting.

A registered Democrat voter who asked not to be identified stopped by the event and joined in the support of President Trump. He claimed to have voted for Trump in 2016 and pledged to vote for him again next year in 2020.

Republican candidates James Schmidt and Justine Wadsack were also present at the event. Both are competing against 4 other candidates in the August Republican Primary.

Pima County Republican Party Executive Director Bobbie Jo King was approached by one of the democrat attendees and asked, “As a woman, how could you possibly support him?” King responded “You should read the original documents instead of listening to the news” before turning away to leave the event.

Students from the University of Arizona College Republicans also attended the event. After waiting patiently for their turn to speak with Representative Kirkpatrick, staffers refused to afford the students the chance to have their questions answered. The event was terminated shortly thereafter.

Former Representative Ron Barber was approached by the college students after the event and utilized his walking cane to shoo away the inquisitive event attendees. This is not the first time Barber has accosted or threatened a constituent.
