Phoenix police are investigating an officer involved shooting that left a man dead after he led police in a brief pursuit.

According to the Phoenix Police Department, on November 4, 2024, at approximately 10:00 p.m., a two-man patrol unit was dispatched to a call of a home invasion in the area of 15th Avenue and Chipman Road. The caller told 911 operators a man was forcing his way into the home and was armed with a handgun. When officers arrived, they found a pickup leaving the area with the suspect possibly inside. The officers attempted to stop the pickup by activating their lights and sirens. The driver of the pickup, 41-year-old Carlos Fregoso, failed to stop and led officers in a brief pursuit that ended near 15th Avenue and Wier Avenue after the pickup crashed into a short block wall.

Fregoso allegedly got out of the pickup with a gun in hand. Officers gave Fregoso commands to stop and drop the gun as he continued to run towards a residential home. As Fregoso reached the driveway of the residence, he raised a gun towards the officers which resulted in the officers firing their handguns.

After the shooting, officers provided medical aid until the fire department arrived and determined Fregoso died from his injuries on scene. Detectives recovered two handguns by Fregoso and an additional rifle inside the pickup truck.

It was later determined Fregoso was the suspect involved in the initial home invasion call.
