The Pima Community College men’s basketball team (30-0, 18-0 in ACCAC) completed its second straight undefeated regular season on Wednesday after beating Mesa Community College.
The No. 4 ranked Aztecs beat the Thunderbirds 104-66.
Sophomores Isaac Johnson, Brock Mendoza, Mason Hunt (Bradshaw Mountain HS) and Mason Tippett (Cienega HS) are the four active carryovers from last year’s team that complete their regular season careers at Pima at 60-0 overall and 36-0 in ACCAC conference play.
The Aztecs started the game on a 13-0 run and held the Thunderbirds without a field goal for the first seven and a half minutes. Mesa chipped away at Pima’s lead as the half progressed, but the Aztecs maintained a double digit advantage at 41-27 at halftime.
The Aztecs pulled away in the second half and used an 18-2 run in five minutes to take an 89-49 lead with 4:09 left.
The Aztecs scored in triple digits for the 17th time in 30 games this season.
The Aztecs had six players score in double figures. Hunt finished with a team-high 20 points as he went 6 -for-11 from the field and 5-for-7 from beyond the arc.
Freshman Isaiah Hill (Premier Prep Academy) fell short of a triple-double as he closed it out with 17 points, nine assists, seven steals and three rebounds. He was 10-for-12 from the free throw line.
Sophomore Taevean Famutimi-Brown and freshman Will Feagles (Notre Dame Prep) each scored 13 points off the bench.
Mendoza was a perfect 6-for-6 from the field adding 12 points and five rebounds.
Johnson contributed with 11 points as he was 4-for-6 from the field along with seven rebounds, two assists and two steals.
The Aztecs shot 61.4 percent (35-for-57) from the field, 50 percent (12-for-24) from three-point range and 81.5 percent (22-for-27) from the free throw line.
The Aztecs will be the No. 1 seed for the Region I, Division II Tournament. They will host a semifinal game on Thursday, Mar. 5 at the West Campus Aztec Gymnasium. Their opponent and game time are TBA.
