The Yuma County Sheriff’s Office (YCSO) is warning the public about a scam targeting families of individuals in custody.
According to YCSO, scammers are impersonating law enforcement officials and, in some instances, claim to represent bail bond agencies that can accept payment for an inmate’s release.
YCSO says bondsmen are not permitted to solicit their services by telephone and will not call requesting payment for an inmate’s release. Inmate release payments must be made in person by cash or through a surety bond obtained from licensed bondsman. Credit cards, electronic payments, and payments over the phone are not accepted.
Law Enforcement will never call to request money, bail payments, gift cards, wire transfers, Zelle payments, or any other form of electronic payment over the phone.
YCSO advises members of the public who receive a call demanding immediate payment or creating a sense of urgency, to hang up.
