A Phoenix man is dead after confronting officers with a knife.
According to the Phoenix Police Sergeant John Buchanan, on September 6th, 2026, at approximately 11:00 a.m., officers responded to a call of a suicidal subject, identified as 20-year-old Jonathan Marquez Delgado, in the alley near 18th Avenue and Cheryl Drive.
Call comments stated the complainant’s family member was armed with a knife and attempting to harm himself.
Upon arrival, officers contacted Delgado in the alley and observed that he was armed with a knife and appeared to be actively cutting himself. The officers gave him multiple commands to drop the knife, but he refused. Delgado then began walking towards them, at which point a Taser was deployed against him; however, it was ineffective. Delgado then began running towards police, at which point two officers fired their weapons, striking him with gunfire.
Officers approached and provided medical aid. He was subsequently pronounced deceased on-scene.
