Regents grant in-state tuition to DREAMERs

They hiked the tuition for everyone then granted in-state tuition to DREAMERs too

The Arizona Board of Regents met today to discuss the recent Maricopa County Superior court decision in the State of Arizona v. Maricopa County Community College District Board and granted in-state tuition for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) students.

The Maricopa County Superior Court has ruled that a Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals recipient who presents an Employment Authorization Document and who meets Arizona law residency requirements is eligible for resident tuition. (State of Arizona v. Maricopa County Community College District).

“The Arizona Board of Regents will interpret its policies in accordance with this ruling. This will allow DACA students with an Employment Authorization Document who meet the statutory and policy requirements for residency to establish in-state residency for tuition purposes at our Arizona universities,” according to a statement released by the Regents.

Maricopa County Superior Court Judge Arthur Anderson ruled last week, that undocumented youths who came to the United States as children, known as DREAMERs are eligible to pay the same in-state tuition as other Arizona resident student at state schools. Anderson found that it is the federal government that determines who, and who is not, in the United States legally.

Anderson found that illegal youth who have employment authorization documents, have an “appropriate documentation of lawful presence.”

As a result, DREAMERs will be able to pay the same inflated tuition for classes that provide no real value for future employment. They can go into debt for the rest of their lives to earn degrees in Hip Hop with minors in Buddhism.

The vote to award in-state tuition was unanimous. Both Superintendent of Public Instruction Diane Douglas and Governor Doug Ducey, who are voting members of the board, were in attendance.

Scholarships A-Z, an advocacy group for DREAMERs issued a statement: “We as ScholarshipsA-Z, along with other community organizations and supporters across Arizona, applaud the Arizona Board of Regents for making the right decision. By choosing to comply with the law and charge in-state tuition to DACA recipients, the doors to Arizona’s 3 public universities are opened wider. This decision from the ABOR means that talented individuals across Arizona will now have the opportunity to attend or transfer to exceptional universities.”
