Flagstaff Council To Consider Minimum Wage Battle

The Flagstaff City Council will consider adopting a tentative budget today. The Council’s agenda also includes a discussion and possible action on options related to joining the Flagstaff Living Wage Coalition’s legal action.

While Arizona’s economy continues to sputter and small businesses struggle, the Flagstaff Living Wage Coalition’s lawsuit challenges the constitutionality of ARS 23-204, which preempts local authority to regulate compensation and benefits. The group hopes to force cities and towns to set their own higher minimum wage, driving small businesses out of business.

Options for Council include joining the lawsuit, waiting for a ruling from the Superior Court, adopting a resolution supporting or opposing the litigation, or taking no action.

The Council may also consider a request by Councilmember Jeff Oravits to reconsider a recent resolution regarding a Veteran’s Facility on McMillan Mesa. Oravits is interested in changing or removing elements in the resolution in his request for reconsideration.

Today’s Council meeting starts at 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. at Flagstaff City Hall.
