Next week, the Pima County Board of Supervisors will consider a proposal by Supervisor Ally Miller to limit the amount of County owned vehicles to be used by members of the Board of Supervisors as a way of cutting costs for the sake County residents. Not only do Pima County supervisors enjoy the extravagance of taxpayer funded transportation, the taxpayers foot the bill for some of their travel as well.
Supervisors must travel back and forth to meetings, trainings, and the dreaded State Capitol to represent their constituents. In poorer, more rural counties, supervisors do not have access to the big bucks to travel in style. In Graham County, one supervisor is well-known – and loved – for his willingness to pack a bedroll, an Igloo cooler, and a pistol for his overnight stays in Phoenix area Walmart parking lots when stuck at the Legislature fighting for equity for his people.

On the other hand, despite having considerable resources, supervisors like Miller and most of her counterparts in Maricopa County exercise the same sort of restraint when spending taxpayer dollars on travel.
When the Pima County supervisors rejected Miller’s original request for travel restraint she argued that the use of the vehicles puts an extra burden on residents and that in the end, it only makes the Board look bad. Compared to the rest of the supervisors across the state, the travel costs make the Board look worse.
