Tucson Police Shoot “Erratic” Man With Knife

The Tucson Police Department is investigating an officer involved shooting of 28-year-old Owen Frank Herrera, that took place Saturday afternoon in the 100 block of South Bella Vista Drive.

At approximately 4:30 p.m., the Tucson police Department received a 911 call requesting officers check the welfare of an adult male who was acting erratic at a residence in the Bella Vista neighborhood. An officer responded to the residence. As he approached the home, two individuals exited the front door of the residence in close proximity to the officer. One of the individuals was armed with a knife and was holding the knife in his hand. The officer gave multiple commands for the individual to drop the knife, however during the interaction, the man advanced toward the officer with the knife, according to authorities. The officer discharged his firearm striking the suspect multiple times.

Herrera was transported to Banner University Medical Center where he was treated for his injuries. He is currently in stable condition. No officers were injured during the incident.

Detectives from the Homicide Unit and the Office of Professional Standards responded to continue the investigation. As is standard practice in all officer involved shootings, the Homicide Unit is conducting a criminal investigation into the incident. Additionally, the Office of Professional Standards is conducting a separate and parallel administrative investigation to examine the actions of department personnel in response to this incident, according to TPD.

Herrera is in custody while being treated at the hospital. Upon discharge, he will be booked into the Pima County Jail on one count of Aggravated Assault on a Peace Officer with a Deadly Weapon.

The officer involved in the shooting is Officer Troy Lansdale, a 3-year-veteran of department and one of the Lead Police Officers (LPO) in Operations Division Downtown.

Anyone with information about this incident is urged to call 911 or 88-CRIME.
