Ducey Declares Prop 123 Victory

Calling the slim edge a huge victory, Arizona Governor Doug Ducey proclaimed the “votes have been counted and the result is clear,” on Prop 123 on Friday.

As of midnight on Friday, the measure won by a fraction; with 50.82 percent of the voters voting in favor of the measure, and 49.18 percent voting against.

On Thursday, the Maricopa County Recorder’s Office reported that they still had approximately 18,000 early ballots left to process.

That didn’t stop Ducey from issuing a statement declaring victory.

Superintendent of Public Instruction Diane Douglas jumped on the Ducey bandwagon as well, but in a passive-aggressive manner. She stated, “I am pleased that Proposition 123’s passage will mean more money for Arizona schools. While it will provide less money than I had initially requested as part of my AZ Kids Can’t Wait! plan last September, I hope this vote serves as a first step as we work together to improve education in our state.”

“Although nothing in the proposition’s language requires them to do so, I also hope our administrators and governing boards will do everything they can to ensure that this money gets to our classroom teachers either in the form of salary increases or classroom size reduction,” concluded Douglas.

On May 18, Arizona Treasurer and opponent of Prop 123, Jeff DeWit issued a statement calling into question the voting process. “I am deeply concerned about how this election was conducted. It is disturbing that the Secretary of State violated the law which the Attorney General confirms by not providing the legally required voter pamphlet on the pros and cons of Prop 123 to ore than 400,000 voters love those voters while those voters cast their early ballots. This calls into question the validity of the election results.”
