Book Reviews: Free Dakota, The Free Market Existentialist

Jason Tillmann

Our country was founded on independence from rule of the King of England. What about demanding independence in your own personal life? People are being asked to move into the state of North Dakota in order to live a libertarian way of life by practicing the ultimate act of political discourse through requesting a divorce from the United States of America. With a large portion of our current population who would like the Constitutional governance that our country was founded on, the idea of succession is certainly not out of the question, but at what cost? Can there really be peaceful political discourse to obtain the ideas of freedom for the individual?

“No, it is not a cult, it’s not even a group. It’s a bunch of people joined together by wanting to be left alone.”

Take a break from your daily dose of compliance. The father of the philosophy and popular culture series has a new book unlike anything he has done before. Author William Irwin Ph.D, turns the freedom philosophy into popular culture with his newest book ‘Free Dakota’. Embedded within a compelling story about protagonist Don Jenkins who is tired of too much government interference into his personal life, is an insightful philosophical debate on how much control our Federal government should dictate over our own lives and the lives of others. In the story Jenkins and his girlfriend Lorna joins up with the inner circle of a group promoting the secession from the United States of America in order to get more social and economic freedom in their lives.

An excellent story packaged within a thoughtful ideology and a great sense of humor. This book will challenge your own cognitive biases in a way that is far less aggressive then your regular news broadcast while entertaining your vivid imagination. Perverse and provocative in a charming way while taking on some of our most difficult challenges that we are facing in America today. The importance of this extraordinary novel will become even more clear as time goes on. ‘Free Dakota’ often had me laughing to myself out loud and it is my recommendation to anyone who enjoys a good storyline surrounded by intellectual depth.

William Irwin was recently a guest on DisruptUP Radio to speak to Joe about ‘Free Dakota’. Irwin explains what real life stories had inspired him to the different fictional concepts in his book. Irwin also shares his thoughts with Joe concerning the Brexit vote, the “British exit” from the European Union, comparing it to our own countries fight for independence at the start of our nation. Irwin also speaks about “The Free State Project” fight for more personal liberty in the state of New Hampshire and the “Foundation for New Hampshire Independence”, a realistic group wanting a secession from our union. The host, Joe is quite impressed how William Irwin’s fiction relies on so many real life facts and history throughout the novel to really challenge the reader. The Free Market Existentialist: Capitalism without Consumerism

Professor Irwin’s previous book is a non-fiction intellectual explanation of his own personal philosophy. ‘The Free Market Existentialist: Capitalism without Consumerism’ is a thoughtfully persuasive piece of work.

My enjoyment of this analytical book stems from my personal interests of what is best for all people with regard to our economy, governance and our collective morals in practice. My enjoyment in understanding concepts and ideas that challenged my own critical thinking personality proved to be worthwhile. Irwin makes an academic case for free market economics as being a most suitable fit for the philosophy of existentialists such as Kierkegaard, Nietzsche, Sartre, and Camus, who had refined positions in direct competition with Marxism, as an option to obtain individual and collective freedoms.

“Fear of the free market is just fear that people can’t be trusted to think and act for themselves, a proposition that the existentialist roundly rejects along with the proposition that freedom must sometimes be restricted in the name of freedom.” – William Irwin

The claim and explanation that the free market better serves the ideas of ontological freedom verses an economy build from a centralized planner confirmed my own opinions and rational judgment. The objective case made pertaining to our property and natural rights from a realistic perspective, challenged my own perception and cognitive prejudices. The book also thoughtfully challenges the flaws in our mainstream economic thinking built on consumerism at a time when our leaders promote more spending while keeping us emphatically divided.

The observations, logical conclusions and reasoning behind the over all philosophy of this book are difficult to dispute intelligently. The importance of the freewill and responsibility of the individual as a direct benefit to our collective by promoting a more empathic and free society, is why I recommendation this book for anyone interested in these concepts expressed this book. A refreshing thought provoking read.

Last January, we had the extreme pleasure to have an interesting conversation with Dr. William Irwin as a special guest on the Rational Propaganda Media (RPM) radio show. He spent almost two hours talking about his life, human politics, free market economics, philosophy, and the book, ‘The Free Market Existentialist’. You can check out the full interview below.

“Individualism. A common link between existentialism and socialism is rebellion. Sometimes, though, the most rebellious thing to do is to resist the rebellion du jour. Don’t conform to uniform anti-conformism. Find your own way to rebel.” – William Irwin
