Pima County Supervisors Approve Huckelberry Contract, Raise

On Tuesday, the newly sworn in members of the Pima County Board of Supervisors voted to renew County Administrator Chuck Huckelberry’s contract and award him a raise. As expected, the 3-2 fell along party lines with Sharon Bronson, Richard Elias, and Ramon Valadez voting for, and Ally Miller and Steve Christy voting against the massive $374,000 package.

Supervisor Richard Elias gave the most impassioned defense of Huckelberry’s contract due to his need to justify the sweetheart deal which was opposed by many in his district. Elias’ district is one of the poorest in County which is situated in the fifth poorest metropolitan area in the country.

Pima County Sheriff deputies sat and watched as the supervisors argued back and forth over the appropriateness of Huckelberry’s contract. The deputies have been denied a living wage over the years while Huckelberry’s domain has grown; including a larger public relations department.

Although Miller is the subject of a frivolous lawsuit by a County operative, who complained that she had deleted their comments from her Facebook page, Elias threatened one deputy in attendance that he was not welcome to post on his Facebook page. Elias then insisted that the deputy acknowledge that he understood what he was saying, and implied that there would be consequences should he continue posting to his Facebook page.

The public relations department, which uses Facebook and the mainstream media outlets to spread Huckelberry’s propaganda, has also been used by Huckelberry to attack the deputies, Supervisor Miller, and anyone else who dares to challenge the status quo.

During the deliberation of the contract, newly elected Supervisor Steve Christy asked Huckelberry what he had done to deserve the raise. Huckelberry did not respond.
